How do you hang string lights on a wire?

Hanging string lights on a wire is often the best solution if you want a neat, stable and more durable installation. This is especially true when the string lights are meant to run over a patio, between posts, along a pergola or across another open area where the string would otherwise have to carry too much of its own weight.

We usually recommend wire support when the span is a bit longer, when there may be quite a lot of wind or when you want the installation to feel more carefully planned from the start. It often ends up looking better and performing better over time.

When is wire a good idea?

Not every installation needs a wire, but in many cases it makes a big difference.

Wire is especially useful when:

  • the string lights will hang over an open area
  • you have longer spans between attachment points
  • you want to reduce the load on the string lights
  • the installation will stay up for a long time
  • you want a more stable result in wind and weather
  • you have long string lights that will hang freely.

If the string lights are going to follow a wall, a railing or sit tightly along a pergola frame, wire is usually not necessary. But as soon as the string needs to run more freely between two points with a bit more distance, we often think wire is a very good solution.

How to hang string lights on a wire

Basically, the idea is to first tension the wire between two stable attachment points and then fasten the string lights to the wire.

A typical setup usually looks like this:

  1. Choose two stable attachment points
These could be posts, walls, pergolas, wooden structures or other fixed points that can handle the load.
  2. Install the fittings
Use the right type of hook or fixing depending on the surface.
  3. Tension the wire
The wire should be properly tightened, but not excessively hard. The goal is to create a stable and neat line.
  4. Attach the string lights to the wire
Once the wire is in place, attach the string lights along the wire, for example with cable ties or another suitable fastening method.
  5. Adjust height and tension
Make sure the string hangs evenly and that the bulbs get a neat and natural drop.

The most important thing is that the wire carries the load, not the string lights themselves.

How tight should the wire be?

This is a common question. The wire should be tight enough to provide support and hold its shape, but it does not need to be pulled as tight as possible. It should feel stable without looking overstretched. A slight curve can be completely natural and often also looks nice, especially over patios and garden settings.

The most important thing is that it does not become slack so that the string lights start to sag and put unnecessary strain on their own connections.

How do you attach the string lights to the wire?

The most common method is to attach the string lights to the wire using cable ties. It is simple, practical and works well in many installations.

When doing that, we think it is worth keeping in mind that you should:

  • attach the string at regular intervals
  • avoid tightening so hard that the cable gets unnecessarily squeezed
  • let the bulbs hang naturally downward
  • plan so that the weight of the string rests on the wire and not on its own connections

It does not need to be complicated, but it is good to do it with a little thought.

Our hanging kit for string lights

For those who want to make things easier from the start, we at LY Sweden also offer a hanging kit for string lights as an accessory.

It is a complete kit that works well when you want to install string lights on a wire in a neat and stable way.

What is included in the kit

  • Nylon-coated stainless steel wire, 50 metres
  • Turnbuckles / tensioners, 3 pcs
  • Carabiners, 6 pcs
  • Expansion hooks, 2 pcs
  • Wire clips, 6 pcs
  • Screws, 12 pcs
  • Double wire clamps, 6 pcs
  • Socket wrench, 1 pc
  • Nylon plugs, 12 pcs
  • Packaging: 1 set / colour box

We think this kit is a very good option if you want everything collected in one package instead of looking for the parts separately.

What should you think about before you begin?

Before you start mounting, we think it is good to think through a few things:

  • how long the span is
  • where the power will be connected
  • which attachment points you will use
  • how high the string lights should sit
  • whether you want a completely straight line or a softer curve
  • how the wind usually affects the area

That may sound obvious, but those details are often what make the installation feel carefully planned once it is finished.

Do you always need to use wire?

No, not always. If the string lights sit tightly along a wall, a railing or another stable structure, it often works well without it. But when the string needs to stretch between two points or hang more freely, we almost always think wire is worth considering.

The result often becomes both better and more durable.
